HOW TO BE YOURSELF

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken. — Oscar Wilde

Being Yourself is celebrating you, as an individual - learning to express yourself and be happy with who you are. For some people, it's learning to love yourself, for others, it's not hiding who you are or changing things about you to fit in. So read on to know how to express the inner you.

STEPS
  1. Find yourself. You can't be yourself if you don't know, understand, and accept yourself first. It should be your primary goal to find this out. Try to take time to yourself and contemplate your life and choices. Try to think about what kind of things you would or wouldn't like to do, and act accordingly; finding out through trial and error helps more than you might think it does. You can even take personality tests, but be careful to only take what you want from them and not let them define you. Work on accepting mistakes and choices you've made; they're done and in the past, so there is no use crying over spilled milk.
  2. Stop caring about how people perceive you. The fact is, it really doesn't matter. It's impossible to be yourself when you're caught up in wondering "Do they think I'm funny? Does she think I'm fat? Do they think I'm stupid?" To be yourself, you've got to let go of these concerns and just let your behavior flow, with only your consideration of others as a filter — not their consideration of you. Besides, if you change yourself for one person or group, another person or group may not like you, and you could go around in a vicious cycle trying to please people; it's totally pointless in the end. However, if someone you trust and respect critiques aspects of who you are, feel free to judge (honestly) whether or not it is accurate instead of dismissing the critique automatically or accepting it indefinitely.
  3. Be honest and open. What have you got to hide? We're all imperfect, growing, learning human beings. If you feel ashamed or insecure about any aspect of yourself — and you feel that you have to hide those parts of you, whether physically or emotionally — then you have to come to terms with that and learn to convert your so-called flaws into individualistic quirks. Be honest with yourself, but don't beat yourself up; apply this philosophy to others, as well. There is a difference between being critical and being honest; learn to watch the way you say things to yourself and others when being honest.
  4. Relax. Stop worrying about the worst that could happen, especially in social situations. So what if you fall flat on your face? Or get spinach stuck in your teeth? Learn to laugh at yourself both when it happens and afterwards. Turn it into a funny story that you can share with others. It lets them know that you're not perfect and makes you feel more at ease, too. It's also an attractive quality for someone to be able to laugh at themselves and not take themselves too seriously!
  5. Develop and express your individuality. Whether it's your sense of style, or even your manner of speaking, if your preferred way of doing something strays from the mainstream, then be proud of it... unless it's destructive to yourself or others. Be a character, not a type.
  6. Have a productive day. Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and that some days, you're the statue. People might raise eyebrows and even make fun, but as long as you can shrug and say "Hey, that's just me" and leave it at that, people will ultimately respect you for it, and you'll respect yourself.
  7. Believe in who you are. If you're always working to be someone you're not, you'll never be a happy person. Be yourself and show the world you're proud of the way you are! Nobody knows you better than you and that's how it should be. You deserve to be your own best friend, so start trying to figure out how you can do that. If you had to hang out with yourself for a day, what is the most fun type of person you could be, while still being yourself? What is the best version of you? Believe in this idea and use that as your starting point.

Tips

  • There's a difference between being yourself and being rude. You might have your opinions, dreams, and preferences, but so does everyone else. You shouldn't disrespect people who disagree with you; they have the privilege of being themselves just as you do. Conversely, don't agree with something you honestly don't think is right; just don't try to force your opinions on other people.
  • If fads or trends strike your fancy, don't avoid them! Being yourself is all about reflecting who you are inside in what you do, and what you like is what you like, no matter how trendy it is (or not trendy, for that matter)!
  • As the famous song goes, "Life's not worth a darn until you can say, I am what I am." When you can sincerely say it, you will know that you can be yourself.
  • Even if you are interested in something that doesn't interest most people, don't be afraid or hide it; stand up and show your true inner self. People will know how confident you are.
  • Don't worry about anything but being yourself and living life to the fullest!
  • In some cases, reducing Internet dependency might help you feel more "connected" to yourself. It may be easier to nurture your individuality without the perpetual distractions of the Internet. Try not going online for a while, and if this leads you to start feeling better about yourself, then you may want to consider replacing all the excess time you spend on the Internet with offline activities, such as hobbies or clubs.

WARNING (for "how to be a tomboy")

  • Don't get so caught up in being a tomboy that you forget to be yourself. You can wear make-up and pretty clothes and still be "one of the guys".
  • Don't try too hard. If you constantly say stuff like "Dude, I hate girly girls" and change very quickly, you'll look like a total poser and nobody will want to hang out with you. Change slowly, and just act how you feel. Besides, if you are comfortable being a tomboy, you won't have any problems with people who want to be girly-girls. Everyone should be who they are, and if you don't like someone who is girly, don't point them out and say you hate them because their girly.
  • Your parents may get upset, particularly your Mum. If she's really girly and likes hanging out with you, she may be upset you're changing. Don't worry, just explain you're changing but you're still the same person.
  • Just because you're a tomboy doesn't mean that you have to forget your personal hygiene but you don't have to spend hours in the Bathroom every morning. Shower at least once a day. Though the boys may smell bad after a game of football, try not to smell that bad. Wear deodorant and keep yourself clean.
  • Never wear anymore of those cute little dresses, it will ruin your tomboy rep.
  • If you've seen boy's jeans, they're a little ripped up, not hugely ripped.
  • This can be a hard lifestyle. You'll have to take girly girls make fun of you. Just ignore it or come up with a witty response.
  • Don't be flat out rude to girly girls, it makes you out to be a jerk.
  • If you are a girly girl changing to a tomboy, you can still keep your old friends.
  • If you are in high school people might assume you are lesbian. Politely correct them if they are wrong. Explain you just like being a tomboy or lead an athletic lifestyle and aren't into girly things.

HOW TO BE A TOMBOY

Do you feel confined by the chains of femininity? Are you horrified at the thought of spending more than two seconds in front of a mirror? Not every girl wants to be glamourous, and sometimes she just wants to be one of the guys. Here's how to step outside the box and be a tomboy.

STEP
  1. Avoid wearing soft and powdery colors like they're the plague. Light pink is notoriously girly. Stick with bold, darker colors, such as navy, red, and black.
  2. Be physically active, especially with sports, and do it earnestly. Don't join a team just to mine the field for potential boyfriends. Throw yourself into the game, get in touch with your inner competitor, and don't be afraid to break a sweat. Try a really cool sport like martial arts. You get a good workout, meet great people and learn something that you can really use.
  3. If sports aren't your thing then try video games. Getting yourself an X-box 360 and Gears Of War is a good choice but you don't have to stick to First Person Shooters, Even a simple Mario or Sonic game will suffice.
  4. Choose clothes that allow you to become physically active at the drop of a hat. Jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers are always a good bet. High-heels, skirts, and dresses are no-no's,if you plan on doing anything physical that day .Before you leave the house, ask yourself: "If someone invited me to play football, would I have to turn them down because of the way I'm dressed?" If the answer is yes, change, but,if you aren't let your femininity free.
  5. Get used to hearing the people around you belch and make other unpleasant noises and smells with their bodies. Odds are, you'll spend a lot of time surrounded by testosterone, which doesn't always favor good hygiene and etiquette. However, have some self-respect. Don't do it yourself. Let's face it, guys simply can't help it. We can . . . and civilization depends upon us.
  6. Don't be boy crazy. If you want to be like one of the guys, you can't be THAT much into guys. No one's asking you to avoid attraction to the opposite sex...Just don't make it the centerpiece of your focus. There's much more to life than obsessing over guys.
  7. Learn how to talk. Don't gush or talk in a really high pitched voice. Find the right volume and pitch, and don't mumble. Make sure you sound confident. Swearing doesn't mean you're a tomboy, either, so don't do it. It sounds pretty cheap. Use words like "crap" if you get annoyed, don't go around sounding like some x rated movie. You don't have to use "dude" or "man", but if you think it helps you and you're comfortable with it, go ahead.
  8. Start hanging around boys and wearing non-girly clothing.
  9. You can still be friends with total shopping, lip gloss loving, hip swinging girly girls, just do not become one, or elseyour friends that are boys will totally turn you off.
  10. Make friends with other tomboys, they'll introduce you to their friends and you can do a lot of things that boys can do that girly girls never could, like for instance play football ond boy basketball.
  11. Learn to skateboard or go on the scooter! After school you and your friends can go to the skate park and have skating contests.
  12. Appreciate that you are one of the guys and they will accept you more easily than the girly girls that they tease.
  13. Observe boys and how they walk. that's really important. They don't use havds on their hips or swinging hips, they use their shoulders and take huge steps forward.
  14. Run a lot. You don't want to get left in the dust when you are racing with a friend. They might get a little surprise when a tomboy passes them.
  15. Chances are they will ask if you watch Naruto, Fear Factor, Mar or anything else like that. It is optional, but you might want to try it.
  16. Don't be afraid to get down and dirty, grass stains on your jeans, scuffed up shoes, that's a real tomboy right there.
  17. Wear some boyish clothes like un-jeweled jeans or camouflage pants. You could also just wear baggy pants. For a shirt you may want to buy some very baggy t-shirts with boyish designs. You might want to wear skateboard shoes or converse. Exceptions for pink is a VERY dark pink.
  18. Joke around a lot.

TIPS

  • Always wear your hair in a ponytail or cut it short so it doesn't stick to your head when you sweat, but if you want to not tie them, make sure you straighten it.Two low ponytails or a plait would be ok, but sort of pushing the limit. Take care of your hair, tough-boys take care of their hair too, so it's alright. Wash your hair as much as needed, brush/comb it everyday, and don't use too many hair products. Don't keep fiddling with your hair though. Bangs are cool, so don't feel like you have to clip them up. Long hair doesn't mean you're girly, either. If you want to get your hair cut, don't get it too short unless it really suits you. Make sure it's styled properly. A layered cut is great, because it makes hair easier to manage if it's thick, and it looks just awesome when you put it in a ponytail. Not girly, either. It looks quite skaterish.
  • Don't bother with make-up or nail polish unless you feel like it. You don't have to dress up to please someone else, but you don't have to look like road-kill to be tough, either.
  • Don't let girly girls be mean to you . . . or anyone else, for that matter. Learn to deal with it without screaming, crying or looking stupid.
  • Go out and enjoy nature. The key is not to be afraid of spiders, bugs, and the like. Or if there's a girly-girl screaming about the bug in front of her pick it up and move it outside. It really impresses guys to know that you aren't afraid of creepy things, but everything has a right to live.
  • When you have to shop, go to a skate shop or somewhere that sells stuff you like.
  • Never be afraid to let your creative side show.
  • You don't have to like sports. That's part of the stereotype, Video games can be a better alternative.
  • Don't be afraid to gush over boys with your girl friends.
  • Look good sometimes. Don't act extremely like a guy, since that is just being stereotypical.
  • The tomboys I know are girls who don't care about what others think of them. If you're someone who lives to please and get compliments, don't become a tomboy.
  • Being a tomboy is mostly natural.
  • If your parents are really sad ask them questions about their childhood then they'll understand.
  • Be yourself
  • Do not wear dresses, only shorts and a loose tee shirt
  • Don't wear loud make-up
  • Never ever EVER wear girly jewelry or friendship bracelets or anything like that. Boys will ask about that and you will have to make a quick excuse.
  • You girly girls who adore those dance jackets and those disgustingly wierd striped knee socks, they gotta go. Never wear them again! Donate them or something.
  • You may want to cut your hair if you have long hair and like to put girly objects in it. If you want to keep your hair, wear it in a ponytail.
  • Don't be on your cellphone 24/7
  • If you are looking for clothes, you don't have to go to some skate shop you find in the mall. If you go shopping at a place like Kohl's, just head straight for the boys department. Don't worry if you see a boy there that you know.
